// SEE THE WORLD ON SOMEONE ELSE'S DIME

See the world on someone else's dime

Up for an adventure? Try a different kind of travel. These opportunities give you a closer look at another culture in a way you'll never see it from a train window. Plus you'll meet new friends and learn new skills, all while having your trip subsidized or even paid for.

// Volunteer holiday

Take an altruistic approach to travel. Contribute your time, energy and skills (or learn some new ones) to an overseas charitable cause. Your contribution will make a real difference to someone else's life. Check out a specific organization that interests you, like Habitat for Humanity, or visit Volunteer Abroad.

// Charity marathon

Athletically inclined? Then run, baby, run! Put your talents to work for you — and for a charitable organization — by pledging to run a marathon or compete in some other long-distance fundraising event. Many organizations, like the Arthritis Society's Joints in Motion program, provide coaching and transportation for you and your team mates to the event location if you raise a certain level of funds.

// Work overseas

Unless you've got a truly fabulous job lined up for the summer, why not consider applying for a job in another country? There are lots of opportunities for students, particularly in teaching and hospitality. Living and working abroad gives you insights into the culture, language, money, accommodation, food and all other aspects of daily life in that location.

In fact, Canadian citizens between 18 and 35 can work legally for up to a year in many different countries. Visit the government of Canada's International Youth Programs site for more info.

You can also visit your school's career centre or visit Verge online magazine for more ideas on travel with purpose.

// Study abroad

Going to school somewhere else means you can see another country while continuing your education. Some schools have established relationships with other schools through an exchange program. Others offer summer courses in a foreign setting. Check your school's website.
